[Expérimentation en sciences humaines] Koen Van Daele, Onroerend Erfgoed, Flanders Heritage, Storing Imperfect Temporal Information about Cultural Heritage in a Relational Database
Résumé : In the field of cultural heritage (archaeology, architectural history, historic gardens), there is a strong need to record temporal information (eg. when a church was built, when a site was excavated, when an architect lived, …). Unfortunately this information is often absent, partially present or otherwise imperfect. This session outlines several possible methods of dealing with this problem. First a short analysis of this problem and it’s causes will be made. Why is the information imperfect and what types of imperfections are there ? How do relational databases typically deal with temporal information and how well does this work for us ? Different strategies that have been used the past ten years for dealing with this problem will be presented. Each strategy is based on a real life example that is being used in a production environment. Each of the possible solutions has it’s own strengths and weaknesses, which will all be adressed. A comparison of the solutions will be made and some guidance will be offered on which one to use for which problem.To close the session, we will offer some insights in our future plans for handling imperfect temporal information.
